two things.

Usually, one would say that they're afraid they'd fall, being seated so near to the edge. That's what I would say too.

But after staring at this picture, I came to this conclusion; Or maybe, being that close to the edge, I might give in to the urge of pushing myself beyond, using my feet. Then realizing my stupidity too late as I hurtle to the ground.

i've thought about jumping off bridges and tall buildings before, and i always wondered what i'd think on my way down, the split seconds.

nice pic. I've never thought of jumping off a building or a bridge. Having a small possibility of surviving it is horrifying. Broken bones, splattered face and all.

Jumping off a building is not my type of suicide because there is still a possibility that the fall hasn't killed you instantly and that you'll feel the pain for some time o.O

The person in the photo doesn't look afraid at all to me. She looks like she's found the perfect spot in the city to enjoy the breeze and her cigarette. I bet that after that smoke, she'd gather her things, get up and go get something to eat. :p (That's a serious statement from me, btw.)

It's all a matter of perspective.

From the picture, it looks like the girl would die more from lung cancer than jumping off the roof. She's enjoying her smoke, and getting her nicotine fix while sitting on the ledge adds to the (non-literal) high. Then there's the satisfaction of flicking the still lighted butt over the edge and watching it's orange arc get extinguished upon hitting the pavement.

Well, I've said a mouthful, but that's what I thought, and what friends who do like to smoke from precarious positions have told me. And coming from someone who has very recently realized a fear of heights, she REALLY doesn't look like she's thinking of anything other than having fun.
